The Art of Dolly Cahill Johnson

About the artwork you'll discover here

by Dolly Cahill Johnson

I think that one of the most exciting aspects of being an artist is the ongoing evolution that I experience in my work. Although the underlying concept remains, my perceptions of it as well as my creative approach continually expand. Each piece brings some new discovery and joy of creation.

Technically, I use my colors to create warmth and temperature and emotion and space. I seek to tap into the "spiritual" emotions that come from such experiences as accomplishment, freedom, exhilaration, intrigue or the type of thrill that comes when listening to an exciting piece of music.

I want to capture a moment of emotion that elicits memories and experiences. But I want to capture the response and the concept rather than the image, so I use brilliant, intricate color, strong composition, movement, depth and rhythm to express this.

I create abstract visual environments of color, light, space and rhythm which invite others to participate by adding their own feelings and perceptions. This is somewhat similar to the way that one responds to music, contributing emotionally to the rhythm and performance. And whether the viewers are soaring with my fine art kites or wandering into the world of my paintings, I want them to experience something unique, perhaps a new way of perceiving, perhaps something more.

In fact, the relationship between the viewer and the art can be so intertwined that the paintings themselves take on a different look, not only with changes in the ambient lighting, but even with the mood of the viewer.

Like music, my works exist outside the realm of time but in an emotional and spiritual environment which opens new worlds.
